“Company” at the Pittsburgh Public Theater

The Pittsburgh Tatler: How to describe Steven Sondheim & George Furth’s 1970 musical Company? It belongs to the category of theater that eschews narrative progression in favor of an episodic exploration of issues and themes, and that tries thereby to capture the Zeitgeist of a certain moment in time. In the case of Company, the issue is, superficially at least, marriage

Up until this year I haven't known very much about Company aside from the fact that it is a Sondheim musical. I have gotten the opportunity to listen to most of the music and further my understanding of the plot. It is a great show, and its very cool that we have a few alumni in the production. I really hope to get the chance to see it before it closes. I should take any opportunity i get to see shows, especially a production like this one.

Sondheim's music is genius because it gives the actor so many opportunities to apply Laban technique physically and vocally. An actor has the choice to be to press, wring, or float in this musical. I still don't understand the ending to this show and I've seen it 5 times. He's alone and he blows out his birthday candles even though he just sang being alive. In the song he sings "Someone to hold me to close". It seems as if he wants love but he ends up alone by his choice at the end. I thought the cast of Company had a unique take on the show. I've never seen the lead Bobby with so much energy. He's usually a melancholy attractive man. In this one he was very energetic with no sex appeal. Made me wonder why any girl would date him.
