CMU tuition up nearly 3 percent for next fall

Pittsburgh Business Times: The total cost of attending Carnegie Mellon University will be 3 percent higher for incoming students in the fall.
In an email sent Tuesday, CMU Vice President for Campus Affairs Michael Murphy said annual tuition will be up 2.9 percent to $48,030 for incoming students and for those who entered in fall 2013.

Ugh, this is absolutely absurd. CMU needs more money? Yeah right. We're already paying absurds amount of money to come to this school and receive an education, although it is a great education, there is no reason to be paying this much. I understand that money is a necessity to make things happen at a school like this but I still don't think that 48k a person is needed for what is going on here. That's a whole lot of money.

I agree with Nick 100%. The increase in tuition is ridiculous. We already pay an insane amount for tuition and they want to hike the cost up even higher?! Are they out of their minds!? Sometimes I find CMU does things that just are not fair to its students and it makes me wonder if were all being robbed of our money. Just the other day I had to get a new Student ID because the one issued to me was defective allowing my picture to ware out preventing me from getting a package. When I went to the HUB to try and get a replacement I was told it would be 5$. I was outraged to say the least. 5$ is not that much money in the grand scheme of things but what set me over the edge was they made me pay for something that was not my fault. In fact the man at the hub even admitted that it looked like one of the few defective cards issued. I refuse to believe that if I pay such high tuition, CMU cant issue me a new ID card for free. And then they want to increase tuition! This is a joke and quite frankly I think students should speak up and say something to the University.

I got this email a while ago and was pissed, not just for the obvious reason that I don't want to owe CMU more money, but I was also upset because the email was phrased in a way that made it seem like, "good news, CMU is charging you more money" though that may not have been the intention. I absolutely hated the line, "While this relatively modest increase is consistent with our goal of containing costs and managing our resources appropriately..." I think the school should consider itself a failure if THAT is there goal. This school is particularly crappy with giving financial aid especially because they very rarely actually match the grants given by other schools as they say they would do.
