Happy 10th Anniversary of Wicked

Women and Hollywood: Today celebrates the 10th anniversary of the now classic musical, Wicked. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel, the show written by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz changed theatre forever. It opened up the theatre business to a whole new world of girls and young women. While the show got mixed responses from critics when it opened, it became clear very quickly that girl power was going to fuel this phenomenon...and here we are 10 years later and the show is going strong around the world.

WOW! I can't believe that it has been already 10th anniversary of Wicked. Although I have not seen Wicked yet, I have heard most of songs from Wicked and everytime I hear the song, I can imagine the world of the musical. To me, Wicked is something that I always aspire to watch in Broadway but, at the same time, something that I do not want to save until later. I am surprised to see how this musical had a mixed responses from critics when it first opened. To me, Wicked is recognized as very succeeded musical in US, but also it is something that brings enthusiasm among people in my country, Korea. In my country, not a lot of people are interested in musicals or theatre. I know that because it is due to lack of recognition and advertisement, but I always wanted to be something that people are thrilled and excited to go see. When the Wicked musical came to Korea in 2012, however, it brought unbelievable success and awakened the world of theatre to some extend. It eventually became the most successful performance, or musical, that performed in Korea, and in 2013, as a celebration of 10th anniversary, the Wicked is now opening composed of Korean performers. I really hope that the Wicked can further bring some of thrill and excitement to people who were not initially interested in theatre and I am excited to see what kind of feeling or impact I will get by watching this musical someday.

I never though to think about Wicked as a show about "girl power." Looking back on the show's story, I now see that, but I never thought about it in that context before. It really is great seeing shows opening up more doors for women, such as this one. When I watched Wicked a couple years back, I truly had an experience. At the time, it was my favorite musical and I couldn't believe I was going to finally see it. It was truly magical. I'm happy to see it still thriving. I love the show and the music and the story a lot so I'm really happy to see it continuing to give audiences pleasure with a different side to the Wizard of Oz story.

I cannot believe it has already been ten years! I remember sitting in the car and listening to the soundtrack the first time. I also vividly remember the first time I went to see the show (I've now seen it four times). I love everything about this musical, from its sets to its music to its plot. Everything about it is flawless. While reading this article I got really nostalgic and was remembering something I read about Stephen Schwartz writing For Good. He asked his daughter what she would say to her best friend if she knew she would never see her again. A lot of what she said became the lyrics to the song. It's wonderful to have seen the progress and lasting impact that Wicked has had on the theatre world over the years. I hope to see it run for another ten.

Its crazy that wicked has been running for over 10 years now! I actually remember when it opened back in 3rd grade and then shortly afterwards i was lucky enough to see the original cast perform on broadway. Wicked for me exemplifies all of the things i love in theatre. Really cool technical feats, captivating unique story, great design, and awesome catchy music. Also eugene lee and ken posner and my favorite scene and lighting designers respectively. I'm so glad its still running strong as ever and I look forward to working on a show thats just as great in the future.
