Stratford Festival to film productions for worldwide theatre distribution

The Globe and Mail: Coming soon to a cinema near you: the Stratford Festival.

Canada’s largest theatre company has revealed plans to launch an annual series of films of its productions to movie houses around the world, becoming the first in North America to follow in the footsteps of major British institutions the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

I think this is a genius idea. It obviously borrows from filmed performances such as the Met Live and National Theatre live. Additionally, the plan to film the entire cannon is extremely ambitious- a smaller scaled attempt is exemplified by England's "The Hollow Crown" which are filmed adaptations of Shakespeare's well known history plays. I only hope that the films will be concerned with artistic merit as much as they are with the dissemination of work to schools. If Cimolino takes his time, and does not rush this project, it could be a milestone in theatre and educational history.
