Updated Project Pinocchio web service Now Available
It is Alive in the Lab: Project Pinocchio is our technology preview that leverages Autodesk's powerful 3D design and animation tools so you can create fully-rigged custom 3D characters. You design a creation of your own or modify existing stock characters using a variety of pre-defined body types, facial features, and clothing styles for inclusion in 3D games, animations, and scenes.

The end of this article was entirely confusing. I do not understand what they were trying to do with the whole adult/child thing. All of the "children" were simply small replicas of the adults but with enlarged heads. Some of the female children were even developed, so I really don't know what to think about that portion of the article. The rest of it however, I thought was great! I had no idea that software like that was out there. It seems like such a great tool. I am curious if it would be something interesting to look into for use in costume design. If you can put in body types and try different hair styles and could somehow input your designs it could be a really valuable tool. I will have to look into it sometime to see what this program can really do.
I agree with April that the section at the end about the "child-proportional characters" was a little bit odd. They don't look much like children at all, just squatter versions of the adults. All the same, I can see there being a lot of potential for such a program if it were fast and easy to use. Though the program does remind me of the internet dress up doll games that young girls like to play, it does seem like it could be helpful. I wonder if there are any limits at the moment in regards to clothing or facial features, whether or not that would be very severely limiting to a designer -- and of course, if /when that limits will disappear.
I don't really see the big deal about this. It seems as though it's just a character creation plugin for a game now a days. From the article it seems as though the main thing that AutoDesk is trying to push is that they've started working on a system to access their applications from mobile devices rather than creating a port. Honestly, I feel as though they shouldn't bother with this and just leave their apps to be used on computers, especially after seeing how well they did on creating another AutoCAD for mac that is missing tons of features.
I don't really understand what this product could be used for... is it for costumes?
Because the characters aren't that realistic.
It sort of reminds me of the SIMS game, but the characters in the SIMS are more realistic.
I wonder if anyone ever thought of using character creation from games such as the SIMS or Skyrim for costumes.
