CopTool Holiday Gift Guide for Power Tools & More 2013

coptool.comcoptool.com: Each year we work to put together a list of some of the most popular power tools and related gifts from the previous year as well as a few classic staples nobody should be without. This year has seen some great new products hit the market that we think would really get any tool nerd excited to unwrap this holiday. Here are just a few of the hot items which we’ve broken down to several different groupings.

This has some fun gift ideas, but I sincerely doubt anyone is going to buy someone a $800 lathe for Christmas, or a $4000 CNC table. In general, I feel like buying someone a serious tool as a gift could be a bad idea- with something that expensive and personal, it might be too easy to mess it up by buying the wrong brand or the wrong style, since there's so much personal preference that goes into buying tools. If I was looking for something off this list to buy for someone, I'd probably stick to stuff like the pocket knives or head-lamps; good-quality, useful stuff, but not something insanely expensive that the recipient would probably want a say in the choosing of anyway.

I'm actually not crazy about any of the smaller items on this list. I think the Milwaukee knives look cheap, and when in the shop or on the job I prefer the changeable razor blades over a static blade. The heated jacket is a great idea,I hadn't seen this product yet but I think it's a great idea for contractors and guys who work outside often. And like Sarah points out, I think the lathe and cnc might be a little impractical, plus I really don't think I'd want a generator for Christmas....Before I read this article, I was half expecting there to some of the new cordless tool sets are miter saws on this list, especially after some of the great reviews CopTool has had.

The list had some cool items, but as Sarah said some of the items are way too expensive to get for someone as a gift. I found this list to be really disappointing. I thought that it was going to be a bunch of cool/new tools at a range of prices, but it ended up being a couple of small items and then a collection of super expensive tools. If I were to get anything on the list I would probably get one of the Milwaukee knives, but even that I'm not sure about. Overall, the description of the list was not accurate and although some of the items on the list are cool the list as a whole isn't a practical gift list.

I agree with Thomas and Sarah, as far as holiday lists go, this list is far to expensive to be remotely practical. I a good gift list should be affordable because I don't know a single person who has the money two spend 4000 dollars on a christmas present. A good tool gift guide should be more in the 40 to 400 dollar range (because there are people out there who can afford the 400 dollar gift. All is a CNC machine really a holiday gift? It seems more like an investment to me.

There are some cool items on the list and if you look through the playlist of videos they provide there is some more cool stuff there. The Milwaukee product demos are particularly impressive in that their cordless tools outdo corded ones made by other manufacturers. However I do agree with Joe that their knives look cheap but if you are looking for a cheap knife will no bells and whistles, they could be a good option. I also agree with Sarah that making expensive tool purchases for someone else isn't the best idea. Everyone has their personal preference so it might be best to go with them to a tool store and check everything out and let them choose. Also who is buying someone a $4000 CNC table or $2000 table saw? I didn't really see anything on this list that particularly struck my fancy but there were some interesting things.

While I certainly wouldn't mind a cnc machine or a lathe for Christmas, there are really more practical gifts available for tool lovers. The inline heater system is kind of cool but sounds like a rather lame gift to receive on Christmas, the same goes for a generator. Those both sound like things that you would buy out of necessity.

While this is all nice and dandy, I think a lot of this is seriously irrelevant unless you have quite a deep pocket. Yes, some of these things are cool but I don't think Christmas is about buying the coolest most expensive thing out there (disagree if you want to), but I think its more about finding the things that are going to be seriously useful for that person. Whether it be a multi-tool that will get daily use, or a nice cordless drill that will be used for more than specialty projects, the idea is the same. Unless you have an overflowing wallet, stick with things that will be used and will be worth it.

I think this has some great ideas for people who like tools. This could also probably be a great companion list for anyone who knows someone who is technically minded and might otherwise not know what to get them. I do agree with sarah though that some things are a little ridiculous to be on a tool list like the CNC. Other than that though, i would enjoy getting many if not all of the tools on this list as a gift!

So many tools, so many cool things . . . I especially think that our shop should invest in some of those calendars, even if they are a year old. I especially like the small CNC table router, It seems like it could be very useful for smaller and possibly model making applications, rather than our 4’x8’ table.
