Diane Paulus's Cirque du Soleil Show Headed to New York
NYTimes.com: Cirque du Soleil has discovered that one way to wow New Yorkers — that is, beyond the company’s usual blend of daring acrobatics and high-gloss artistry — is to come to town with productions staged by major directors.

You give a person a chance to shine once, and when they do, the gain endless fame and new opportunities in the business. I bet you Diane Paulus never thought she would be directing a Cirque show only two short years after PORGY AND BESS opened ob Broadway. Since PORGY AND BESS won Best Revival of A Musical and PIPPIN won Best Revival of a Musical and Best Director, Diane Paulus's career has completely sky-rocketted. I am so thrilled for Diane and I am so inspired by the work that she has been creating/recreating. One of my dreams is to work with this visionary, and I hope that one day, I may be able to. This article just goes to show how one show that is a hit can change the career of a person drastically.
I have always loved Cirque and I think this is a good step for them. I saw Totem and absolutely loved it. Even though a show should not just be about who is directing it, it is good to see that a city can gather around a show. I hope to see the show!
This is really great for Cirque because of Diane's recent rise to fame with Pippin. Seeing as most people know how successful her circus-esque show was and how well known it was will really help with people wondering if this show will be good or not, although it is Cirque du Soleil which is already expected to be amazing. I think this is a great pairing of company and director and I really feel that this production will flourish in NYC. I can't wait to see its successes along the way.
I checked out the website for Amaluna, and it looks sweet. There appears to be a great mix of classic and new, breathtaking acts. there are some really interesting costumes too. The designer seemed to pay particular attention to the materials she used. For example, she used entirely denim for an act that was supposed to represent adolescence. a costume that looks particularly crazy/ cool is the peacock. According to the website: "The tails open out to a "fan" of eight feet with hydraulic pistons that compensate for their weight." Woah. It must be insane to design costumes for acrobats because it's essential that the design does not restrict the performer's movement. Last, the set design looks awesome. There weren't as many pictures, but it does a really cool job of making a natural feeling environment out of purposefully non-natural materials. Way to go Cirque. I can't wait for this one!

I think its a good idea for cirque to bring their shows to New York! Cirque is a different type of theatrical entertainment and I think it could do really well in new york right along side of the big broadway musicals. I would be interested in cirque building a theatre in new york similar to the ones in las vegas. I also think this show speaks to the overall versatility of the director. To go from porgy and bess to cirque du soleil is quite a range, and I'm happy that she was able to make such a jump successfully.
