Live Sound: Learning The Trade: Going To School Versus Going To Work

Pro Sound Web: I’m a graduate of The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Arizona. Loved it. Learned the foundational stuff. After graduation, I made several mistakes. Actually, while I was there I made a lot, too. Took some heat from the old guys about going to school when I got out.

School is not for everyone, and school cannot teach you everything. But, school can be the right choice. I think that the author brings up an interesting point when he describes his experience in college. For some trades, college may not be useful. For example, in hospitality, one can start low and rise in the hierarchy without going to school. That said, college does have its benefits. Take CMU drama, for instance. Many SM/PM and TD majors go straight out of graduation into fairly high ranking jobs, jobs they couldn't have gotten as quickly if they had not gone. Additionally, some people need the college environment to learn the basics. Overall, I would agree with the author, there are pros and cons to both options, you just have to decide which one is best for you.
