Venue deals blamed for drop in regional tour bookings

News - The Stage: Touring theatre companies have warned they face an increasing threat of closure because growing numbers of regional venues can no longer offer financially viable contracts for visiting shows. One producer who spoke to The Stage said negotiations with venues were becoming harder. He said he had seen a 25% drop in bookings because profit margins offered by receiving houses were so low.

Its unfortunate that touring shows are finding it increasingly difficult to find venues for their shows. From the venue's point of view, its a poor decision to host a show in which you are losing money. But, at the same time, touring shows bring something new to a venue and provide theatre professionals with work. Although I like the idea of travelling theatre, being able to bring the same production to a wider audience, in this economy it isn't practical and it might be time for travelling companies to take a break.
