Scarlett Johansson and Al Pacino Spell Profit on Broadway
NYTimes.com: Scarlett Johansson knew there had been other Broadway revivals of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” recently, in 2008 and in 2003, but so what? She wanted to play Tennessee Williams’s famed Maggie the Cat on Broadway. Her only worry about timing, she recalled, was a tight window between wrapping movies in 2012 and filming a “Captain America” sequel in 2013.

I really think it's a shame that our industry has come to this. While I think it is great that so many movie stars are interested in performing on Broadway, I think it is really sad that virtually the only way for a Broadway show to "make it" is to have a star in the cast. If the industry continues this trend, soon it will be completely impossible for any actor who is just starting off to make a break. It is already hard enough. If actors aren't finding work because all of the work and the money is going to movie stars, people may eventually see a downward trend in the numbers of aspiring actors in places like New York. As a result, the talent pool and, consequentially, the quality of theatre, will decrease.
