7 Memorable Jukebox Musicals
www.backstage.com: “Jersey Boys” officially turns 3000 tonight, well 3000 performances that it is. At eight shows a week, the 2006 Tony Award winning musical continues to make theater-goers weak in the knees with nostalgia. Even for the younger generation, who might not remember “Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons,” it’s hard not to bop along to the remarkable vocals offered by “Jersey Boys.”

I have to say, I've only ever actually seen one of those shows, so it's hard for me to say with authority, but I think that each of these shows, while probably very entertaining, are only on stage to make money. These shows are such much fun for the crowd because it's music that everyone already knows and loves. It's almost like the plot doesn't matter because each musical number will be fantastic anyway. Of course, Im sure all of these shows have worthwhile plots, but from where I stand, it looks to me like Jukebox musicals are only performed to make money. Not to tell a story and contribute something to the theater community.
