I find it unfortunate that i haven't seen any awards shows in the last five years or so. I'm beginning to see that it's not just about giving out awards, but a review of achievements and trends for the year. A lot of what is being featured at these shows is pretty telling of the technologies that have been developed recently or are in the process of developing. These awards re also a pretty clear record of what humans have been able to create and they show a record of combo human interests for the year. Looking back, awards would be an interesting way to tell human pop culture history. I hope I have time to watch the Oscars tonight.
These award shows are becoming more and more elaborate which is cool because these are the shows where lights, sets, and media can really experiment because there is not really much of a story line to follow. Also the tech can change with the different themes, movies, announcers, etc... The costumes are always an exciting part for me because I love to see the different outfits on the red carpet and then the changes made during the show. So for example a female host will change her outfit at least six times throughout the night and it is interesting to see the progression as the night goes on.
I don't really miss an award show and I must say that what I have been realizing is that sometimes I may mute the television, blocking out the less than interesting performances and watch the display of effects. However, I completely enjoyed Carrie Underwood’s performance at the Grammys and the animated projections on her dress. That was an example of the performer and the effects working together to create a great themed performance. Sometime the effects can be too much, or maybe I should say the performance may be too little. Nevertheless I am always glad that technicians are allowed to experiment and deliver at the shows.
