What’s New at 2012 STAFDA Tool Trade Show

coptool.com: Last week we were at the Specialty Tools and Fasteners Distributors (STAFDA) Trade Show, where tool and accessory manufacturers get together to promote their products to tool distributors around the world. There were some exciting new products we finally had a chance to get our hands on, some of which we already knew about, but others that were pretty exciting new things. In the coming weeks we will circle back and do full reviews on many of the products we take a look at here.

I didn't know there were powered crimpers. That's cool, but what about the tradition of the frosh struggling to cut their first piece of aircraft cable during stagecraft rigging? The cordless (I'm assuming easily portable?) Mag Drill could be really useful in a theatre where quick adjustments need to be made on set, and they don't have a shop next door like we do. It also looks like there's an increasing wave of brushless tools coming out. As I understand it, these tools with brushless motors will be more powerful, last longer, and have the capability of being 'smart', for example, sensing resistance in a material and adjusting.

If Makita has really solved the problem of shattering screw tips (more often the problem with impact drivers than breaking screw heads: use better screws!), then I personally thank them. Thank you, Makita. Now, could you please figure out a way to make them quieter? My dream driver: 12v impact driver (you laugh, but have you ever used a good one - and it fits in your pocket!), 15 minute charge, with a quick release chuck adapter for drill bits. I bought the 14.4v, 1.5 Amp Hour Makita set five years ago, now discontinued I think which is a shame because the smaller light battery that charged in 15 minutes was incredible. I think I used the standard driver in the set twice in five years. Whether or not we like it, impact drivers are most assuredly the wave of the future. Get used to the rattle folks.
