Zarkana: Sound Design
Live Design: “I would have loved to do a new approach for Zarkana, but Radio City Music Hall is an historic building, so there are very few places you can put speakers,” explains sound designer Steve Dubuc, who has worked on various productions for Cirque du Soleil from Alegria to Zaia. “The in-house system at Radio City is JBL, but I brought in a Meyer Sound PA, with the MICA line array comprising a left and right array with 16 boxes on each side, plus eight in the center cluster,” says Dubuc. “The Meyer speakers is hung on the same FOH points where they hang their own system at Radio City.”

This is fascinating that the audio system in Radio City was found so lacking that the Cirque designers needed to bring in a new system. The idea of bringing the sound down to stage level with the cabinets at the front of the stage completely removes any trace of suspension of disbelief within a theatrical performance. This system will be wonderful at immersing the audience in the show and furthering the precedent of shows having to sound as natural as a movie. Another interesting part of this system is the control structure being very decentralized and making real time corrections for acoustic anomalies.
