I have to say that I have not seen Memphis yet. It sounds like an entertaining show. And the line in the article about 'a theatre full of Memphians watch a show about Memphians written by two guys from Jersey' cracked me up because I love it when shows are weird like that. It usually works out though, and I dont think that Memphis has had any lack of success seeing as how they have earned multiple Tonys. I also wanted to read this article because I knew that one of out recent alums, Daisy Hobbs, is in this show as well. Sure enough there she was in an article on Playbill, I wish her all the best and am sure that this tour will be just as successful as the original.
Like Sonia, I have not seen this musical either. Although I have seen the MOVIE of this musical. Mostly the pattern seems to me that a musical goes big on Broadway, runs for a few years, then has one or two national tours, then closes on Broadway and then waits 3 years and then has an all-star cast shoots the musical version of the show. Usually with Mathew Broderick and Nathan Lane. Instead, Memphis did a 5 camera shoot of one of their performances during the original run and then did a wide release. Therefore I have seen a video of the Broadway show. Now here is the interesting point. Because I have seen the movie I have no interest in seeing this show at all. I have already experienced it. Now this is just me. Are there people out there who are MORE inclined to see this show because of its DVD release or has that move hurt their box office. I do not know if there is a way of determining if this move has hurt them financially.
Sonia and Dale, I saw Memphis and it was great! The actors really gave some credible performances and the singing and dancing was amazing. The production was also nice. It was actually the first musical that I saw on Broadway and not watching on television or elsewhere, but I was impressed and that does not happen easily. The production had me so captivated that I realised when a sound cue was late! However that was the only one and the show continued on course. I would love to have seen it again and made comparisons, but unfortunately it's from the Dec. 27-Jan. 1, 2012 and I won't be here.
I'm not surprised to hear that Memphis is launching a national tour, though in no way am I excited to hear about it. I saw this musical in New York, and really didn't find it to be anything special. However, it had the advantage of opening during a pretty unpromising season, and was able to sweep the Tonys (the first sign that a show has touring potential). I wonder how it will be received by the rest of the country, especially after being shown in movie theatres-that move could either help or hurt its potential audience. We'll see if this tour does well, though I wish more exciting broadway shows could be sent out on tour instead of things like this.
