I think the utilization of Sketchup is a indispensable tool for designers, engineers, etc. It has the ability to develop ideas and solutions quickly and effectively. It should not be confused with the actual need for Autocad or other drawing, engineering, or 3D software. I use it on a daily basis to work through technical design issues and spacial relationships. It also provides a cost-effective solution to relay information to the client for design issues as well as buy-offs.
Back in high school, I sporadically used Sketchup and it was a great software for a high schooler like me to create CAD drawings without having to pay for AutoCAD or other softwares. Although after watching the video, I realized you can actually make impressive 3D models. The 3DWarehouse idea sounds really fascinating. Just from visiting it for a minute, it's pretty awesome to be able to download models of various buildings/structures around the world and explore around with it.
I feel that the use of Sketchup is the next auto cad for design. I think that Auto cad is going to keep a good place in the technical drawing. Sketchup is great for showing a director a pretty good representations of what your are wanting to make. With auto cad it is a lot of work to make something look good and change it fast. Also the cost of auto cad is so high that not many people can afford the program. On the other hand it is some what ridiculous that Google is taking over our world. First they are taking over with the search engine and then gmail and then with all the other things that they have came up with. I just wonder what they are going to come up with next.
