News from the Bay Area arts scene, April 2

SFGate: "American Conservatory Theater Producing Director James Haire has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the current season, after 40 years with the company. Having arrived in 1971 for what was supposed to be a one-year stage-managing job, Haire stayed on to become ACT's production manager in 1985 and producing director in 1994, working with all three of its artistic directors, founder William Ball, Edward Hastings and Carey Perloff.

How sad that such a legacy with ACT will be retiring! Just goes to show you necver know where you will end up since he started as a season SM and ended up as production manager for over a decade... Interesting choice for Center Rep to end with Xanadu, it just does not seem like a very strong close... On Oregon Shakes I am intrigued by what Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella is...
