D.C. theater gets fest-ive

Variety: "If there's any doubt that Washington, D.C. has evolved into a serious theater town, two projects with divergent aims should put that to rest: The Arena Stage is presenting a festival devoted to the works of playwright Edward Albee that includes two full productions and staged readings of all other Albee plays. Across town at the Studio Theater, a three-play festival is under way to celebrate rising Irish playwright Enda Walsh.

"Friends don't let friends work at Studio Theatre" was a mantra when I worked in DC... and yes, I worked at Studio for a while, where do you think I LEARNED that mantra?

And yet the damned company that uses up interns and young inspired theatre kids like toilet paper is still around and, dammit, still doing some really good theatre. I don't know much about Enda Walsh's work, I know Studio has always had a knack for doing Irish playwrights' work very well (though that she counts as a "foreign" playwright is a blatant technicality, in my opinion).

Arena Stage, on the other hand, has a much better reputation both on and off stage. I always liked working there and just about anything I've seen produced. I've yet to make it back to DC to see Arena's new space, but I hope to soon; as I hear it's spectacular.
