It's odd that given the success of Avenue Q, it has taken this long for puppets to become big in the performing arts. The Muppet show when it ran was an enormous success mostly because the show could get away with more because it was puppets and not people. Even a major movie (Forgetting Sarah Marshal) had a puppets on the stage segment, so this surprise at the new popularity of puppets just strikes me as the next step rather then surprising.
