Variety: "Broadway's finally hit a billion.
In year-end figures compiled by the Broadway League, the cumulative Main Stem gross for calendar year 2009 hit the fabled benchmark of $1 billion -- although it's as much a feat of bookkeeping as anything else."

It's nice to see that Broadway is making a bit of a comeback. The fact that those who record the finances of Broadway have chosen to change how they keep track of financials, is a little bit troubling. Given the new format and tracking, I am not really sure how the existing data can really be compared to the data from prior years when the system was different.
I would not have thought that these would be the numbers. I think part of me thought it would be more, and the other part would be less. Its interesting that there still seems to be a steady climb, even though there have been other seasons with some pretty heavy hitters as well. Perhaps some of the $$ can go to the Spider Man operations cost.
This article is great at showing that Broadway is doing well even though the economy is not doing that well. It is cool that they broke the one billion dollar mark and there are less shows being done to get to this total dollar revenue. There are more people going into less shows and having higher occupancy. It is great to hear that Broadway is doing great even though you always hear about the negative issues of these shows that are having difficulty getting funding and filling the seats. This is showing that the people, even in an economic downtrend, still go to the theatre even if there are less shows being done. Maybe, there needs to be less shows actually being done to keep Broadway up at high grossing revenues. I hope that Broadway keeps this up in the years to come, which will keep this industry healthy and profitable.
