George Lucas Imagines the Future of Cinema (On Cellphones)

Gizmodo: "Wow! That's what I've got to say after listening to George Lucas speak at the World Business Forum today. The legendary filmmaker discussed everything: innovation, his movies being made for phones.
In the 'Future of Cinema' discussion Lucas was asked questions (by Ben Mankiewicz of At the Movies) about his accomplishments, but also about his drive to innovate new film technology (if you don't know Lucas has started a handful of film companies). 'I had to invent what I didn't have,' Lucas said."

While people can watch movies on everything from their iPhones to, soon enough the cellphone I'm sure, I think that the movie theater will live on. If you ask anyone, I'm sure they will agree, you go to the movie theater for the experience. Action movies are always best when huge and loud and all around you. However, ticket prices across the nation are escalating to ridiculous highs, so the idea of designing for these new mediums is a relevant one. Other modern examples I can think of are the "webisode" and other such things. It would be interesting to see what kind of film or art is developed specifically for, say, the iPod Touch. Would it be interactive? I can't wait to see. But I'll keep going to the movie theater for those movies I just can't wait to see.

I think this opens up an interesting question of what method of viewing in mind movies will be made with. In other words, will things like web-content continue to evolve to the point that most media is released with intent of viewing on a mobile device? I really hope that this doesn't evolve to the point that major movies will be made only with the intent of being seen on a mobile device, with the movie theater being just an afterthought, because what would be created for something so small scale may not work on a large screen, but it does work the other way around. I just really hope that the idea of going to a movie theater with friends isn't lost.

i think that he is so wrong in say that cinema should be made for cellphones i think that is to small of market for then to target also i think that the cellphone should be a thing that all movies should be made for not making it for the cell phone. i can see how he wonts to do this. the iphone and phones like it with the large screens and all of the thing that they can do. but i think it well be a bad idea to make movies for cellphones. i think that theaters and the tv is the place that people wont to watch there movies. so i think that he is wrong

I think movies should stick with their roots and original releases should always take place in a movie theater. Besides bringing in the needed revenue to make movies profitable, a movie theater adds an immersion element to the movie, where the screen is so big, you feel like you are part of it. I think the ability to watch a movie on your cell phone is great, and the current model for being able to put one on your phone after the movie has been released to DVD is great, but for it to be direct released to cell phone would be a travesty to the industry, and far from revolutionary.

The technology today is amazing, but still not where they are dreaming it will be. The ability to watch movies on a cell phone sounds like a good idea, but I personally like having a large screen when watching movies. I also like going to a theater to watch movies when they first come out, but I still like having that experience. Otherwise, I am interested in seeing where things are going.
