Build A Quick, Easy & Beautiful Website

iWeb: "Having recently discovered a way to get my own (unlimited) domain names and several good places where I could host them for free, I can’t help but falling into the mood of web building."

Another great website that I used to create my portfolio is www.cargocollective.com. If you send them an email requesting a username, you can create a sleek and professional portfolio. You can upload pictures, create slideshows, upload videos, and more. It's quite user friendly. Among the other sites users, you can follow their portfolios, which sometimes includes advertisement work for Nike, Skype, and more.

I didn't realize that i had this program on my mac! For now, my website is created by a friend of mine out of Stanford (but now that we're both at college that will change). At the moment, it doesn't really need updating, as i'm not working on any significant projects, but at some point it will. A program like this will allow me to build a website better, as i am normally REALLY bad with programming, computers, and that sort of thing in general. I also could use this to work on a portfolio site in the near future, hmmmmm.....

Macs are really becoming so helpful. I've tried to make a website with Dreamweaver, and it really didn't work out well. The technology was way too powerful for me to wrap my head around. I feel like a lot of the products that Apple puts out are very user-friendly. This is definitely a program that I would be interested in using, because it is a program that I can adapt to my specifications, while not being so cumbersome as to confuse me. Thanks, Apple!

As Ariel mentioned, cargocollective.com is another great site to make a website. Currently in testing, the site is free and customizable and meant for designers. It allows one to create their own style, compiling pictures, videos and other images. IT is user friendly and great for portfolios. The url is even customizable.

The great part is you can make it your own and like twitter follow updates of people who are in the same interest as your own. I have tried iWeb before and found it very difficult to customize to one's personable preferences without getting in to deep.

I need to try the new update to see how it works. Both sites and apps have their own pros and cons. I am just a fan of cargocollective then iWeb.

As people become much more internet savvy and instantaneous information is more and more desirable, having a website to promote yourself is vital. For designers, an online portfolio will save on printing costs and allow people to browse it without bothering you. For actors, the website will be a place to post your resume and head shots. For production personnel, a website may have fewer uses, but the internet is still an important tool for getting yourself out there. What is important is that your website is clean and professional and easy to use. While iWeb and similar programs are definitely useful to a point, it tends to be fairly clear when someone uses them for a website, so if you can use a program like dreamweaver or try to customize you iWeb templates.

I've been trying to build myself a website for about a year now -- always just get sidetracked. iWeb has always been an intriguing alternative to the likes of dreamweaver, if only for its simplicity. However, like most of the iLife suite of products and their ancillary applications, they used to be great, and have since become rather limiting. Like iMovie which used to be a brilliant a little apps, iWeb, which used to be highly functional, has become fairly crippled as the years go by.

Ooo, the links in this article are incredibly useful (free domain names, free hosting, etc). I've been on the lookout for a while as I'm hoping to move away from company created services (LJ, Blogger, DeviantArt) and maintain my own website. I'm quite in love with wordpress right now, but there's no reason iWeb can't be used in a professional setting.

I believe Javier Grillo-Marxuach, a CMU graduate and writer of the Middleman (man, I'm really pimping the CMU alums today), uses iWeb for his website (and Apple hosting). You can find it here.

It's great to see programs like these in order to get web sites up and running on your own. I remember I was kind of interested in this kind of thing as a kid, but it was always more difficult than I could manage, so it's really cool to see programs that are easy to use, and provide people a way to express themselves through the internet. The tips provided on what to do are also pretty helpful, and might entice me to go and take a crack at building a web page again.

What got my attention in this was the mention about the free domain names. I'm always looking for cheaper options so when I saw that I checked it out right away, but it turns out that they're not the customary .com (or the like) addresses, instead they're off in yet another foreign island nation that's trying to capitalize on its top level domain suffix.

That aside, iLife is a very useful tool to do an initial web site or even to continue to maintain a simple one, but it's the kind of program that can quickly run into limits when you try to get into more complicated sites.

I currently use iweb 08 for my website, and while I have been very pleased with the design features, I have been less than pleased with the uploading features. Perhaps this is the nature of the hosting I am using...or perhaps it is the nature of the 08 infrastructure. After reading this article, I am looking forward to upgrading to iweb 09. It seems much more user friendly and there seem to be more ways to customize.

This looks awesome. I like Brian did not realize that I have this program on my mac. This would have been so handy in creating my website. Although it was put up about three to four years ago and I don't think that this was out. I went through three different programers to get what I wanted for the website when with this it looks like I could have done it myself.
