A Chance for Some Theatrical Gems to Shine
NYTimes.com: "London boasts so many theatrical offerings that it is sometimes easy for smaller productions to slip through the net or for those shows originating in the not-for-profit arena to be eclipsed by the 10-ton gorillas that sashay their way, “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”-style, to the West End. The Almeida Theatre’s British premiere of “Parlour Song,” the play by the Englishman Jez Butterworth that was first seen in a completely separate Off Broadway staging this time last year, probably cost less to put on in its entirety than a single one of the more scintillating frocks in “Priscilla.” But as staged by Ian Rickson, Mr. Butterworth’s usual London director, a three-character play that in New York seemed rather opaque has landed on home turf with genuine punch."
