Reuters: "The movie and TV industry contributed 2.5 million jobs and $41.1 billion in wages to the U.S. economy in 2007, according to a Motion Picture Association of America report."
The growth of the entertainment industry is good not only for us as potential workers but for the economy as a whole. Film was one of the major sources of revenue and escapism in the dark times of the Great Depression and entertainment has a history of strong showing during otherwise financially challenging times.
It is good to note that this data is from 2007, a full two years ago; other articles on this blog claim a huge downturn in profits for Hollywood in the last year. Some of this is due to the recession but other members of the industry have decided to blame the writer's strike. If the industry truly is having difficulties, it's ridiculous to blame a certain group of individuals. If it's one thing that CMU teaches, it's that entertainment is a collaborative effort. If you're not working together to create something, your project is going to fail - either artistically, financially, or both.
