Ashland's season of darkness and light

Sacramento Bee: "With an annual budget of more than $24 million, the venerable Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Ore., seemed recession-proof.
'I used to think the festival was immune to a recession. I no longer think that,' executive director Paul Nicholson said."

It is so sad how much the economy is effecting theatre's operation. But it is comforting to know that this festival can still run, although downsized. Perhaps a result of this economy will be to "in tune" theatre companies to what the public is really looking to see. Maybe this will decrease the "high" theatre that some seek, and be replace with more "common" "overdone" shows - but there is a certain value to entertaining the greater public and not just catering to the average theatre goers.
