Playwrights are more important than politicians. So why do powerful people mesmerise me?
The Guardian: "There's something mesmerising about meeting powerful people. I mean really powerful people, the kind who decide whether we invade Iraq or bail out the banks. They even mesmerise each other. I've twice been a guest on Radio 4's Start the Week. Each time, while waiting for the programme to start, I was struck by the collegiate atmosphere in the green room."

I agree with his assessment that playwrights are just as important. If there was no theatre, or even worse no art, people would have no way to reflect on the politicians work. The world would just be a sad muggy place. Because the art exist, the politics have a world to operate in and people to "control." Art keeps the people happy and alive so the politics have something to work with. They might not view art as immediately important but the world would be a VASTLY different society without it.
