Is 'West Side Story' Overrated?
TIME: "As someone who likes to think I have a fairly complete education in the Broadway musical, however, one show holds a special place: West Side Story. Of all the widely accepted masterpieces of the genre, it's the one I have never seen onstage. Nor even — until a few weeks ago, when I finally broke down and rented the DVD — the multiple-Oscar-winning 1961 movie."

It is sad to think that West Side Story is overrated, but after reading this article in a lot of ways it seems true. I have not seen the Broadway version of this show, only a high school production and of course the movie. But looking back on both it does seem that WSS is a little overrated for what it has to offer. Though hopefully the current production does well for all those who enjoy WSS.
Perhaps this author thinks that the revival of this show is overrated, but you can't call the show overrated. Sure - maybe the strange sets by James Youmans and the pungent lighting by Billington create a strange stage picture - but the show itself I believe is timeless, and it pains me that in the face of a greenday musical "West Side Story" could be called dated.
