Another ‘Coraline’ Waits in the Wings

NYTimes.com: "“Coraline” the movie opened on Friday; “Coraline” the musical is in the works. MCC Theater has just announced a bit of unconventional casting news for its stage adaptation of the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman."

Although I am excited to see one of Neil Gaiman's books being made into a stage adaptation, I wonder about the casting choices. Is the age range something that is going to translate well for the audience, or is it to drastic to be cohesive? Also, I feel like Broadway is now starting to feel as though it is not allowed to make musicals until the movie has first been released. Do we have that little faith in the theatre audiences that we think they will no longer appreciate an original Broadway musical?

Gah. Really? The movie hasn't even yet come out and they're already waiting in the shadows with a stage adaptation? Are we really so desperate, that we have to make films into theater pieces at every instant. Geeze. I agree with Brooke, who thinks that the public isn't going to appreciate an original piece? Maybe its just me, but I don't want to read the book about Coraline, then see the movie, then go see the show all in one day. I would like to have a little variety. What's up with original shows anyways? Are they just not getting produced? Where are they hiding? I don't want to watch Shrek, the Musical, or a singing Spidey, I, as an "American consumer", whatever that is, would like an original show please.

One of Neil Gamain's books was already adapted for the stage. The Wolves in the Wall, as a matter of fact and as far as I can tell it was met with positive reviews.

I saw this article by chance in the UC earlier this week. The strangest thing about it is the fact a 55 yr old is playing Coraline. I think it's going to be wonderful and weird and if that isn't original, maybe originality is overrated.
