Taboo topic addressed on Eden Prairie stage
Star Tribune: "Eden Prairie students hope to turn the embarrassment into something meaningful with 'Blackout,' a student-created play that opened Thursday, exploring underage drinking in the suburbs. Some say it's a step toward healing for the school that prefers to tout its status as the state's biggest producer of National Merit scholars."

Every once in awhile, something like this gets publicity (more likely kids actually getting hurt doing stupid stuff) and authority figures act surprised that kids drink or do drugs or get into fights or have sex. It never ceases to amaze me, the renewed awe of the community each time.
What's worse, though, is that it renews their vigilance to find out every young person in the wrong doings attributed to their age group. Yes people do stupid things, especially when they're young. No, not every person does every stupid thing.
This is terrific, and something I think the town I primarily grew up in could really relate to. Sometimes I think the suburban areas are overlooked as having problems, because they can remain in their perfect little bubbles. When on closer inspection, their problems are sometimes far more devastating than people might think.
The portion of this article about the access to money and cars playing a large role in suburban underage drinking rang very clear to me, and I very much agree with that as an observation.
