J-o-b - PM/SM

Quantum Theatre seeks a permanent, full-time Production Manager/Stage Manager.

Quantum Theatre is run by an intimate group of four senior staff members, 2 administrative and 2 production. Working together, this group produces the high quality, adventurous work of the company: four shows per year in Pittsburgh, all staged in unconventional venues which aren't theatres, and occasional tours. The Production/Stage Manager supervises the Technical Director and is ultimately responsible for the choices of the Artistic Director, show directors, and designers coming to life in Quantum's venues:

  • Serves as chief communicator among the director, designers, and staff as pre-rehearsal decisions are made. Establishes and maintains a production budget.
  • Establishes rehearsal calendar with director and maintains schedule. Creates rehearsal environment, including hospitality, and is advocate for the actors. Creates supporting documents: contact sheets, calendars, rehearsal reports, tech schedule.
  • Serves as liaison to building owners and managers in venues where Quantum is a guest.
  • Serves as Equity Stage Manager (paid union wages for the weeks of rehearsal/performance; balance of full-time salary paid over non-production weeks.) He/she enables rehearsals, is central communicator among all parties throughout the production weeks.
  • Prepares the company for tech, and runs tech, seeing that each artist's needs are accommodated. Prepares the run-crew. Runs the show and maintains the show's technology. Works with the T.D. to load in, load out, and strike the show.
  • Works with the T.D. to maintain Quantum property in storage. Runs auditions and manages artistic communication as directed by the A.D. in non-production times. Participates in Quantum events throughout the year.

Requirements:

  • Background in technical theatre including some experience with sound, lighting, rigging, carpentry, and video.
  • Management experience and ability to supervise a crew.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Experience in Microsoft office, PC-based lighting consol (Rosco Horizon) and SFX sound composition software.
  • Actors Equity Association membership or willingness to join.
  • Flexibility, desire to lead, ability to work independently as well as be part of a team. Understanding of Quantum Theatre's unique product, ethos, and history a plus; desire to learn with this unique company a must.

Offered:

The position offers a competitive salary; company pays AEA health & pension benefits in addition to FICA; company cell phone provided.

To apply: Send cover letter of interest to Karla Boos, artistic director.

I didn’t know you could be a AEA Stage Manager while being a PM as well. I would have thought that would have been in violation of some rule. It seems they should want to hire two different people to split up the work load, I think it would be more productive. Quantum has very site-specific work, and probably a lot of work goes into securing the spots they perform in. Wouldn't it be better if they didnt have just one person to cover so much ground?

It would be much better if they didn't have one person to do the job, but Quantum is tiny. My friend was their TD a few years ago and he was burnt out pretty quick. They're getting better about holding on to people and not killing them, but I wonder how possible it is to do this PM/SM job.

Quantum must go through employees pretty quickly. It seems that at least once a month there is a post about them hiring.
