If I was an actor, I'd like to know if 6,000 people where going to see my stuff before I sign any contract so I must side with them on this. I also don't know if I really want to see naked people on stage. Sure there are a few female leads of Harry Potter, and Juno that I'd like to see prance around on stage... I think I'll end this here.
I wonder if the director/stage management decided they were going to cut the nudity before even casting. ..I'm sure the actors knew about the potential of nudity before signing their contracts. They read the script, right? What an awkward place to be in right now..
This is such a sensitive subject. If you're the playwright, you want them to do what you wrote, damn it. If you're an actor, there's no way you're going to the scene naked if you haven't signed on to do so. If you're the producer, there's no way you're going to terminate the actor's contract early in order to hire someone that will do the nudity. We all learned an important lesson. Don't bastardize stage directions of a playwright if he's still alive.
I can see where the playwright is coming from on this, but he does need to consider the actors. This isn't a stripclub, you can't just demand nudity.
