In the Wings: Changes at City Theatre

Post Gazette: "Kellee Van Aken is leaving City Theatre, where she has worked, she reckons, 'for more than half my life,' starting as an assistant stage manager as a Pitt sophomore and rising to be artistic associate to artistic director Tracy Brigden. Replacing her will be Chicago-based director Stuart Carden, with the title associate artistic director. Carden is well known here from his years earning an M.F.A. in directing at CMU"

It will be interesting to see the types of shows that city continues to produce or the style in which they are presented. I'm sure there will be some season kickoff fund raiser event to promote the change.

I am particularly intrigued by what changes will be put in place with a change in knowledge about the acting pool. The chicago pool appears to be a relatively untapped resource and will be possibly by cheaper than hiring out of new york or LA.
In addition, it's fascinating to see such loyalty from the old Associate Artistic Director and also gives hope to climbing through the ranks of a theater as opposed to just founding one. It demonstrates an appreciation for hard work and loyalty.

An amazing congratulations to Stuart Carden! Having worked with him during precollege, I am sure that his energy and artistic methodology will be a great asset to City Theater. I wonder what changes he is planning to make (if any) and what ideas he will bring to the table to enhance City Theater and the overall theater in the Pittsburgh area. I am sure he will face many challenges being the “new guy” in replacing such an experienced artistic director.
