We must not lock up imagination
Guardian Unlimited: "On the eve of National Poetry Day I have, in keeping with this year's theme, a dream. I have a dream that one day poetry and literature will be judged by the measure of our imagination not the scribble of the censor."

I completely agree with the point of view of this article. Yes, there is some material out there that is disgusting, depraved, violent, cruel and filthy and I do not necessarily approve of the making or reading of such material. But reading something that is disgusting and depraved doesn't make you disgusting and depraved. It doesn't make your actions disgusting and depraved, and it certianly doesn't MAKE you do anything disgusting and depraved. When legislation like this is proposed, one has to be very wary because it becomes all a matter of where the line can be drawn. The second lawmakers start making arbitrary restrictions on art, we have lost are freedoms and it is just a question of what will we lose next.

I loved the way this article was written. It was so frank, honest, and for once STRAIGHT TO THE POINT! I also agree with what is said. Although I can understand why some people are fearful of this freedom, it is a necessary thing. There are many things in the world that scare us and make us uncomfortable, but we don't try to get rid of all of them! So why this? Art is one thing that I feel should be rarely restricted. Already it is so subjective that there really is no basis for such restrictions.
