A free tool that's worth a million

The Hardware Aisle: "Thanks to the people at Google, there is a fantastic drafting program called SketchUp. It is PC and Mac compatible, and downloads pretty quickly. With this program you can now create your own architectural, woodworking, or landscape designs that are clean, clear and to scale."

I downloaded this program just to see how it worked and it works a lot better than I expected it to... It runs smoothly and does the dozen or so simple things that would get you by in a simple drawing. Though in comparison to CAD, of course, it's no match but if you need something to draft in and you don't have the $900+ to buy CAD it's a really great program that surpasses the other free ones I've seen. I guess this is what they do in that google building down the block....

I've actually used SketchUp before and while it isn't a really advanced program, it does its job quite well. It can be fun just to toy around with, or it can be used for practical modeling. My dad loves to really plan out furniture moves, so this is the sort of thing that he'd love to play around with.

This is yet another thing google has created to make people's lives easier. Although it isnt as poweful as CAD, it gets the job done for quick little projects or for people who just need something to play around with every once and a while.
