RogerEbert.com Gender Balances Roster of Film Critics to Uplift Diverse Voices

Chaz's Journal | Roger Ebert: Answering the call for more diverse voices in film criticism and gender equity in Hollywood, Chaz Ebert announces that RogerEbert.com is gender balancing its regular rotation of film critics. Nell Minow, Monica Castillo and Tomris Laffly join Sheila O’Malley and Christy Lemire to round out the website’s roster of female critics to achieve a fifty-fifty split of five women and five men.

Though it is great that this organization is diversifying their pool of critics, I think that this article may be a bit too congratulatory. I am a little tired of the applause awarded to organizations for achieving a balanced gender ratio. Also, it seems like the leadership roles within this company are still being filled primarily by men, which defeats some of the purpose of diversifying the workplace. From there, I saw a small piece of text that worried/confused me. The article states that Brian Tallerico and Matt Zoller Seitz "will also lead the male critics who will write regular film reviews". My question is why they aren't all the critics, male and female, aren't working together? Not to say that this company hasn't achieved something good, but it seems as if they are patting themselves on the back a bit too soon. On the other hand, what Chaz said about challenging the "male-dominated narrative" that Hollywood tends to perpetuate is uplifting and signals that the industry of criticism is moving in the right direction.
