‘Midnight Rider’ Accident: Hearing Set on Appeal of OSHA Violations

Variety: A federal commission has scheduled a hearing starting on March 31 on the “Midnight Rider” filmmakers’ appeal of almost $75,000 in fines and safety violations proposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which investigated the Feb. 20 train accident that killed camera assistant Sarah Jones and injured eight others on the film’s set last year.

I am baffled as to how the Midnight Rider filmmakers can continue to not take responsibility for their part in this tragedy. Some one died as a result of their negligence and calling this an “isolated incident “ does not cut it as an excuse. They made the decision to disregard the health and safety of its cast and crew, and that is their fault. I obviously can’t expect people who made the decision to put lives in danger in the first place, to take responsibility now, but this is so obviously ridiculous. I was also surprised that OSHA’s commission didn’t charge them the maximum amount of money for their violations. I am starting to wonder how many people would have had to die to warrant the filmmakers being punished to the fullest extent possible. I hope that both the criminal and civil court cases bring some justice and closure to Sarah Jones’ family.
