Jim Henson's Creature Shop Brings You the Joy of Monster Making

io9.com: Jim Henson's Creature Shop, debuting tonight on SyFy, allows ten up-and-coming creature designers to put their ideas and technical skills to the test in weekly monster challenges. We talked to judge Kirk R. Thatcher and contestant Melissa Doss to find out what's in store.

Personally, I enjoy watching the food network shows where people cook food that needs far longer than 1 hour to cook in an hour and then have their work judged on national TV, because its entertaining. In the same way, I hope this show will be entertaining, but in a way, its strange. As i have no real experience with cooking, or sorting through sold off storage containers, those shows dont have much personal appeal to me, this business of animatronics and puppet creation is awfully close to what we do in entertainment production, so its strange to see something I could potentially be doing in life being objectified and judged on TV, yet still entertaining.

I love this. This just made my day. Jim Henson puppetry is such a legend, but it is sad how many people don't know who he is. Most of my friends from high school had no idea who he was, and that is surprising because he went to the biggest university in Maryland, UM College Park. My mother went to college with him for goodness' sake. It is a shame that he isn't there to participate in the show himself as a judge to see the creative minds of the next generation coming to life. I hope this show doesn't flop. It'd be cool if it picked up as much popularity as Project Runway or America's Next Top Model.

This looks so incredibly cool, there a ton of shows out there that have people competing in making things but none that i have heard of are quit like this. Before this I have heard the name Jim Henson but I never really knew what he did. I know, I know, I am a theater kid how do I not know? Even though I did not know what he had done specifically I have admired what he has done this show will be very entertaining and hopefully it will gain popularity.

Animatronics is something that really interests me. I love theatre, but I also love electronics and technology and stuff like that, and I came to CMU with the idea of getting to combine theatre and robotics. What I think is the most amazing thing about Kim Henson's shop is the amount of pure detail that goes into all of his creatures is astounding. It's amazing how that level of technical detail has to be combined with that artistry in order to provide such believable characters!

I've been a huge fan of the syfy series Face-off for a long time and this show has been teasing during the commercial breaks for a while now. I watched the first episode of creature shop the other day and I am very excited to see what the rest of the season brings. The show style is nearly identical to Face-off so while it seems a little too familiar, at least its something I already enjoy.

AAAHHH This is like Face Off but with Puppets/creatures!! This is so exciting!!! I am definitely watching this! (Thanks Boevers!) Though sometimes these shows aren't always as real as they seem I still think they are a great way to get these artists names out there and it really helps get the industry known to many people who have no idea about the work that goes into the shows and films that watch! I didn't know anything about special effects makeup until I started watching face off a few years ago and ever since I've not only been fascinated by it but I've started to imagine more fantastical things that I can make with such a field. This opens the eyes of so many people! I really love the fact that they are showing their appreciation to such a field as creature/puppet making because these things should be marveled!

I always find it amazing to think about how far the entertainment industry has come from string puppets to animatronics! Even, though we still use string puppets, to see the variety of effects we can achieve is exciting. I have never seen this show, but personally, I am more interested to see the process of character development rather than the mechanics of it. These characters seem so wild and other worldly and I am curious as to how the parameters of the competition effect the outcome.

I still have not had a chance to watch this, but I REALLY WANT TO, oh my goodness. Whenever I see shows like this one it really makes me evaluate what I want to do with my life because sometimes I feel like if I had the job of creating monsters, I would be one happy camper for a while. It is a shame CGI is taking over monster making. I like that the article addresses how the monster making industry has evolved and it makes me think how much further along it will be by the time I graduate.
