Variety: Sony’s Christian drama “Heaven Is for Real,” which opens Wednesday, is the latest offering in a year with an uncommonly large slate of religious-themed wide releases.
Although there’s long been a robust DVD market and numerous indie releases, more major studios have been taking a leap of faith and embarking on extensive marketing missions this year. It’s only fitting that the senior production exec for “Heaven Is for Real,” DeVon Franklin, is an ordained minister and one of the film’s producers, T.D. Jakes, is a bishop. Jakes has teamed up with “Alice in Wonderland” producer Joe Roth for the project.

I am always a fan of movies about the unseen. This one in particular really grabs my attention because I have also read the book. The book is pretty spectacular with its descriptions and imagery. But I find the most amazement in the pairing of Pastor T.D. Jakes and “Alice in Wonderland” producer Joe Roth. This is an odd pair to me but gives an interesting anticipation for its arrival. This seems to be the new season for these movies. Especially after the new movie "Noah."
It's somewhat funny to hear that the new religious movie coming out are advertised more to the southern states. In terms of business and stereotypical demographics, this makes total sense! I just didn't really think about it until this article mentioned so.
Like Rayqila said, Pastor T.D. Jakes and Joe Roth do seem like an odd pairing. Although, thinking about the backgrounds of these two individuals I am very interested to see what this movie brings emotional and aesthetically.
