Movie magic rolls in Pittsburgh 'like a military operation'

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: On Wednesday morning -- Day 17 of a scheduled 37-day shoot for the movie "Fathers and Daughters" -- crews assembled as the sun peeked over the rooftops of million-dollar homes in Shadyside. They were there to film two scenes inside Mansions on Fifth Hotel.
Five large production trucks, five trailers and a "honeywagon" -- a nicer-than-generic port-a-potty mobile bathroom unit -- lined both sides of Westminster Place. Along Amberson Avenue, which runs perpendicular to Fifth Avenue, were four huge 18-wheelers, two smaller trucks and a variety of cars.

As I have made known before I am really excited about the budding film industry here in Pittsburgh. The number of on location shoots happening around the city is exciting. Having grown up here I have seen the growth of this new phenomenon and have stumbled upon a handful of the shoots around the city. Sure they are inconvenient on occasion, but I think it is worth it in the rebranding of Pittsburgh as a center of entertainment and innovation.

Before living here in Pittsburgh, I had no idea it was at least a moderately sized hub of film activity. I like that we have that here. Its always just a little more apparent how different the film world is from the live theater world, not just in the different artistic and stylistic concepts that people shoot for, but in how differently they produce things. I understand that all of the differences in production lie in that the end product is something different, but it is always interesting to me.

Like Chris, prior to living here in Pittsburgh I had no idea of how large the film production scene was around here. Now that I am here I feel like I see on location shooting every time I go out. It is quite amazing actually. I feel that so much filming happens here due to the diversity of the city. Some areas look like Manhattan while others just look like your average main street. I'm sure it is much less hassle to shoot here as well in comparison to a bigger city like New York City because there is much less happening so closing one street to film for 12 hours isn't going to severely impede day to day life.

I actually remember stumbling across this while it was being shot the other day! It is really cool coming to a city like Pittsburgh with all of its diversity and cultural variety and seeing how popular the film industry is here. Coming from Los Angeles and Hollywood, I see film shoots more often than I'd like, generally its just an inconvenience, but it is actually really interesting to see them in such a different area for me, but it completely makes sense because Pittsburgh has such a compliment of different areas like Mike points out, places that seem like an ordinary busy street, to the city, to a typical suburban area.

Like my other colleagues from other places, I had no idea about the growth of film activity in Pittsburgh. I knew at least a few movies had filmed here before, but I had no idea about the upcoming business. It's exciting to hear about as an entertainment student as well as someone who is relatively around the same places as what movie locations seem popular. This growing business in Pittsburgh is exciting and like many other articles point out, good for community business.

This is just really impressive to me. It just takes so much coordination and mind work along with man hours to pull something like this off. The fact that pittsburgh has rebuilt itself to become a desirable city for people to film is also just really impressive. I think its really hard for a lot of us to grasp just how much Pittsburgh was hurting after the the steel factories closed. The rebranding pittsburgh has undergone is nothing short of miraculous to me. and having the film industry repeatedly choose us as a location on proves further how much this city has accomplished.

So many new productions are being pushed to be filmed in Pittsburgh and I am loving it. I am originally from the east coast and started to notice that more and more filming was being brought here. The money it takes to perform something on the west cost has just gotten to high. Being at college and attending the wonderful acting program at CMU I can only hope one day I get the chance to audition for one of these films
