U of Cincinnati Students Freaked Out Over Vagina Art (NSFW)

CollegeCandy – Life, Love & Style For The College Girl: Walking around campus, you may be shocked to see a professor whose class you “accidentally” slipped out on, or that couple who won’t stop the PDA, even in front of the much-crowded science building but how would you react to a series of photographs depicting vaginas hung up around your campus?

This past Thursday, students at the University of Cincinnati took the issues of female reproductive health and sexuality and presented a project that they hoped would increase awareness and discussion on campus. The photos, in the project named, “Re-envisioning the Female Body,” have been enlarged to be placed on 12 poster boards the size of billboards.

I completely side with the student group who put up the pictures. Their goal of calling attention to the objectification of the female body is founded upon a real issue that more should be aware of. On the other hand, they are questioning the taboo that society has placed around the vagina and female sexuality. There are too many aspect of this issue for the article or myself to go into, but I believe those two are very important as well as promoting the public discussion of female sexuality and genitalia.
Groups like Student For Life are oppressive, and counter the development of a forward-thinking and free society. Why should they be allowed to post pictures of aborted fetuses if that other student group cannot post pictures of vagina? I disagree with their argument that these images provoke rape culture - what these images provoke is thought. And I think we could all use a little thought.

While the pictures are on the shocking, and to be frank, unpleasant side, they definitely shouldn't be taken down. What I found most surprising is the group of feminists on that campus who called for the pictures to be taken down. If anything, these images are about equalizing women, or in the least, making one think about the situation of women and their sexuality in society. This art wasn't put in place to replicate the view of rapists, but to make people think about topics like rape. Though the college took a neutral position, they did the right thing in letting the images stay up, and if the reasoning they cited was the first amendment, that's better than nothing. If the Student for Life group (as a side note, they have the incorrect plurality, unless there really is just one, lone, student), does take this case to court, they will not win against the first amendment. It's groups like those, that are the reason the pictures were put up in the first place.

I agree with the student group and i love the point that theyre trying to make. Art that gets people thinking and talking is some of the best art in my opinon. These photo graphs have meaning and intent behind them. and i think that they are being successful with theyre intention. I do think that some people might be extremely embarrassed and uncomfortable to look at these and I think that their opinions matter and it puts me in a really difficult position because on one hand its the peoples right to put these up but its also unfair for people to have to look at them if they dont want to. I agree with kelly in that i was extremely shocked to read about the feminists. and i think that shes right, if anything this is basically like saying "vagina and proud" i mean its what makes us women and its something thats not useually talked about.
