Co.Design: business + innovation + design: British artist Anthony McCall’s “solid light” sculptures have received an outsized amount of attention this spring, with three concurrent exhibitions in Switzerland, London, and France. An exhibition at Sean Kelly Gallery this month adds New York to the list. The name of McCall’s stateside show--Face to Face--cleverly functions both as a structural description of the work and a way to name what happens when you’re inside of it.

How Do You Separate An Oreo? With a Sophisticated Robot

Geekosystem: Meet HERB, Carnegie Mellon’s sophisticated butler robot. He was built to help mankind by performing household tasks, so of course when Oreo put the call out for machines to separate cookie from creme, the roboticists at Carnegie Mellon University reprogrammed HERB for the job. They also — for reasons — programmed HERB to prefer the creme to the cookie, even though he’s a robot and can’t actually consume either. Watch HERB take some Oreos to task in the latest Oreo Separator video.

Acting Dog Gets Canned For Disobedience

Business Insider: A corgi has been sacked from the West End play The Audience for refusing to obey the command of Dame Helen Mirren, playing the Queen. It is the hit West End show that is delighting critics and the public alike. Via Jezebel

Piano for Wild Party

Prop Agenda: Every musical needs a piano, right? Of course, if you have a piano on stage and people are dancing, you’re going to want the people to dance on the piano as well. Such is the prop master’s life. I had to build a dance-able piano for Elon University’s production of The Wild Party, which closed a few weeks ago.

Productions breathe new life into robotic-play genre

 TribLIVE: They blink and breathe and speak like their fellow castmates. But not all of the actors in “Sayonara” and “I, Robot” are humans; they are androids and robots. Having a robot character is nothing new. In 1920, Karel Capek's “R.U.R.,” which popularized the word “robot,” had seven robot characters. More recently, British playwright Alan Ayckbourn's plays “Comic Potential” and “Henceforward” feature robots in pivotal roles.
