‘Hands on a Hardbody’ and ‘Kinky Boots’ on Broadway

NYTimes.com: For much of its history the Broadway musical has given us license to pursue our romantic ideals, indulge sweet reveries, contemplate cloudless skies. Sink down in your seat, listen to the orchestra tune up for the overture, and put your daily cares out of your mind. Escape, for two acts, to a world where the troubles that come will invariably be solved by the finale ultimo. Tomorrow there will be time to worry about the broken dishwasher, the grim job market, the rising cost of living.

I think it is really good that musicals that connect a little bit more with real life are coming back or becoming more popular. While happy-go-lucky musicals are always fun and enjoyable and provide an often much-need respite from worldly troubles, there is something to be said for a show that is more realistic or relatable to our own lives. Seeing characters in shows dealing with the same problems we might be having in our own lives can help ground us, and look for hope or solutions. If anything, it could let us know that we are not alone in our troubles, and when an audience can connect to a play on such a personal level and access our innermost feelings, that is when theater really achieves its true goals.
