Cambridge University 800th Anniversary by ETC

Design Year Book: "To celebrate the legendary Cambridge University 800 years anniversary, ETC was commissioned to create a light show to mark the celebration. ETC produced a projection spectacular onto the facades of two of the faculty’s buildings – the Senate House and the Old School building. The 50m wide video projections paid homage to the incredible theories and inventions to come out of the famous institution, such as those from Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. The nine-minute looped show played for three nights, attracting thousands of spectators to the town centre."

This type of spectacular presentation seems to be becoming more and more popular for these types of events. It's amazing how large scale the things we do can become with the right resources. I think these huge events help to develop products that we need as well because of the demand for more powerful equipment, software, control, and it really broadens the industry in regards to designers and establishing more standards or procedures that are teachable. It's interesting also that there can be these ridiculous projections, yet in our side of things projections is still not really developed. Hopefully the frequency and demand of these events will provide enough accessibility for smaller companies to take advantage of it more easily.

This is amazing. What they did seems like it is the new way for projection imagery and is catching on more and more. This is the second time in the past few months that I have read about architectural lighting. It seems like it is catching on and becoming a new lighting art form that a lot of people want to see. I doubt that this could have been done a few years ago because the technology was not there. Even today it involves a loy of resources and equipment not available to everyone. I just wonder with the technology now here what will be next on the horizon. I hope that I can be involved at CMU with something like this so that it can be real for me.

this seems really cool and reminds me of the kind of lighting at Vancouver. I like that it incorporate projection and increases what designers can do. What i thought was really cool in Vancouver is that someone online could design there own segment of lighting. Its a cool was to get people involved.
