Astana State Auditorium by Studio Nicoletti

CONTEMPORIST: "This auditorium – one of the largest in the world – was awarded to Studio Nicoletti as the result of an International restricted competition. Founded in the heart of the steppes only four years after the Independence of the Country, Astana is now a decade old new capital of Kazakhstan."

This space looks absolutely stunning. A true testament to human engineering. What I find more interesting is its location. Since such movies as Borat and pop culture being what it is, I feel there is a conception in the United States that Kazakhstan is this uncivilized place where people really keep their mentally challenged family members locked up in cages. Though this may be the capital, and therefore, probably the most culturally affluent area of the country, it is clear that the arts still play a major role in this country, showing a breadth of civilization. It is also interesting to note that this building is held up to very high standards being grouped in the same category as important government buildings.

I have to agree with Jon, this building is really gorgeous, inside and out! I love the flower concept with the walls being placed such that they look like petals radiating out. With so many school and cities cutting back on their arts programs its nice to hear that in Kazakhstan they felt that this auditorium was missing from their city. I hope that others will follow their lead and view the arts as the necessity that it is.
