The Value of Design

BusinessWeek: "Back in December, I published a somewhat bad-tempered blog post. Titled 'Come on Designers. Step Up', the piece was prompted by an article in The Times of London, in which designers and the design industry were hauled over the coals for, essentially, being a waste of taxpayers' money. In this instance, designers had created a new logo for the British National Health Service that nondesigners quoted in the piece (including British MP Greg Hands) deemed both unnecessary and expensive."

This article brings to light a lot of important issues for designers. on the one hand, it is true that design is changing and at times being taken less seriously and considered like marketing a really superficial art. having said that, the reason that design is considered so immaterial and superficial is because of bad designers and designers who choose to sell out or create design flops and take on stupid projects that do not benefit anyone. in my freshman human experience in design class, we used to always talk about designers and social responsibilities and i believe that designers have an obligation to do projects that benefit people not only industrial designers but communication designers. When they asked us the first day in that class to define what we thought design meant, I wrote the lovebaby of beauty and function and I still firmly believe that. More projects like design for the design for the other 90% need to happen and communication designers need to step up their game.
