Sometimes Getting Organized is a Big Fat Waste of Time

SmallNotebook: "For many of us, getting organized is the fun part. We love buying materials for new craft projects. We love school supplies. We’ll make our lists and schedules, and even organize our recipes.
We’ll spend all of our time planning and getting ready, but then starting to work on those projects stumps us. So what do we do? We organize some more."

I admit that I am guilty of this. Sometimes, I feel like I am actually getting things done when all I'm really doing is planning. I mean, planning is essential but, don't do it to a further extent than needs to be done because eventually you'll be planning so detailed that you'll basically be doing the act but with a less focused mind because you haven't actually honed in on the act and are just thinking about it instead; you have not connected thought to reality.

I definitely realized that I have done this a lot. I have justified wasting time organizing, thinking it would be helpful to the start of the project, but really it's not helping anything. I find that sometimes it's hard to jump in and work on something, getting started is always the most difficult part of a lot of projects, and organizing is sometimes an easier alternative. I think that this concept of it being a waste of time applies to a lot of life, outside just academic work.

While I admit to using “organization” as a procrastination technique (cleaning also works very well), I believe that certain tasks or projects exponentially benefit because of “organization” time. It is true that creating a detailed outline of how you plan to write a three-page paper is just a waste of time. However, to narrow in on theatrical examples, spending time preparing for tech week can never be overdone. In a situation that is so limited by time, any planning or organization time is beneficial, as it could make the limited time more efficient. Now everything has its limits, but overall, the more planned a tech is, the better it goes (and the better people are able to deal with the unavoidable problems that WILL come up.
