I've always found the overlap between visual media design and lighting design fascinating. While I've seen pixel mapping be used before to create texture on stage this is one of the most visually striking effects I've seen with it. Concert lighting design has always been interesting to me because in many ways concerts push their lighting equipment to its limits but also sets unique limits for the technical aspects. Concerts often need to contend with limited space and setup time. While I obviously don't know how the creative process for this event went I'd imagine that the constraints around concerts inspired this design in part. I believe that constraints can help a design as well as hinder it. Solving problems requires innovation and can help designers to think about the tools at their disposal in new ways. I've seen similar fixtures be used to create pattern and texture in other productions but using a wall of fixtures to act as and LED screen is innovative.
