Hundreds of Artists Ask NYC Mayor to Ban AI in Schools
hyperallergic.com: Hundreds of New York City artists have joined a campaign to urge New York City schools to implement a two-year “moratorium” on artificial intelligence in the classroom.

While I agree that there needs to be more policies in place regarding AI in schools I don't think a full moratorium will solve anything. I think that everyone agrees that some restrictions are necessary to prevent students from using AI to circumvent learning activities by simply having a computer do their homework. But the majority of students will be expected to interact with AI in their adult lives. I believe a balance must be struck. AI cannot be allowed to supplant student's thinking and creativity but we would be doing students a disservice to not teach them about it. Adding AI to the curriculum could be a chance to teach students boundaries when using AI tools. Much like how in first year writing classes here at CMU we analyze where AI is helpful and where AI is harmful to the creative process students in grade school should get a chance to see for themselves when they should and should not use AI. School is a time to make mistakes. There should be guardrails in place to prevent students from trivializing their education with AI but if we do not allow them to experiment when the stakes are low students will not have proper boundaries with AI when the stakes are higher later in life.
