I think that the opulent nature of modern sports venues is in large part possible because sports venues are often more than just sports venues. Of course, sports remains the primary purpose and a major revenue stream for stadiums. But soccer (football) doesn't necessitate luxurious top of the line LED screens. These screens, while useful for soccer fans, allow stadiums to serve as multifaceted event venues. Stadiums often host concerts and special events in addition to sports. While sports remain the heart of most stadiums they are increasingly built with events in mind. And while serving as an event venue these opulent TV screens can do a lot more than give a close up picture of the action happening live. That often remains part of their mission but LED screens also give a unique venue for VMD to shine. In many cases technicians find ways to use tools beyond their intended use case. Originally displays in stadiums were introduced to show an expanded picture of the existing experience. But with a bit of design these screens can add to the experience rather than simply play it back.
