I find that handoffs are often one of the greater hurdles a production needs to overcome. I think in many ways this is due to form and function. In many design disciplines I've heard the phrase form over function or function over form but in theatre function and form share equal importance. While in some cases such as flats the function might be the form in many cases in theatre the two are disconnected. For example if a play takes place in an old rickety house stairs might need to look unsafe but still function as perfectly safe stairs for actors to traverse. While experienced designers will almost always take function into account when designing a set sometimes details can be missed. When details are missed it makes handoffs more complicated. Whether it be noticing early on and creating a revision to a design before it is constructed or catching an error after it has been built and needing to decide if a change order is necessary or possible. Handoffs are necessary for theatre but greatly increase the complexity.
